The context and role
Khakan was embedded as a senior engineer and technical owner of the member platform through five years of growth. The work combined shipping services with responsibility for how those services were operated.
The stated scale is the organisation’s active membership, not a concurrent-user count, throughput benchmark or number of users attributable to one technical change. Keeping that distinction matters when comparing this work with a new platform.
The platform
The platform used Laravel and Python services on AWS, with WordPress for member-facing content. Hardened authentication and HIPAA-aligned data handling were part of that scope. The infrastructure also included DigitalOcean.
These technologies describe the client engagement. They are not a prescription for every healthcare product. Technical choices need to fit the product’s data, users and operating team.
Building and operating
The engagement extended beyond initial delivery into continued operation. Writing on-call runbooks was part of that responsibility. An operational perspective connects architecture decisions with the people who have to diagnose failures and maintain the system.
For a prospective platform owner, the useful discussion is how engineering responsibility continues after launch: who understands the services, who can deploy safely and where operational knowledge lives. Make those responsibilities explicit before a handover or major change.
What the evidence does and does not show
The engagement combined a five-year embedded role with services used by an organisation serving 100,000+ active members. Availability, cost savings and revenue effects are not quantified here.
HIPAA-aligned handling describes the published scope; it is not a certification claim or a substitute for a compliance assessment. Client names and private architecture are withheld in this case. Detailed reference conversations are available after an introductory discussion, subject to confidentiality.
For teams facing similar decisions
If you are inheriting a member platform or preparing for a change in scale, start with ownership and critical user journeys. A focused architecture review can clarify the immediate risks; fractional CTO support can provide continuity when the decisions extend over time.
